The take-out era: how to help our local restaurants

Everyone’s heard it by now: for the next few weeks, many restaurants throughout the province have to close their dining rooms in order to slow the spread of COVID-19.

Yes, it’s upsetting for many. Yes, it’s an inconvenience we definitely could’ve done without. Yes, it will most likely have important repercussions on numerous establishments. But is that a reason to give up? Absolutely not!

The good news - if you can say that - is that this time around, many restaurant owners were ready for this announcement. Unlike last time, most establishments already have a delivery system in place, and the necessary tools to make a quick and easy transition toward delivery and take-out.

In the blink of an eye, many announced on their social media platforms that their take-out and delivery menu was ready to go. It seems to be the most obvious and best strategy to put in place. This allows restaurant owners to keep making sales while staying in touch with their customers. It isn’t the same as being able to welcome them on site, but it’s better than nothing.

Imagine if this pandemic had occurred a few years back. Before delivery services such as Doordash or UberEats came to be. Before social media became a powerful tool to help restaurants survive. What would’ve happened then?

Yes, we want to leave our houses and enjoy our local restaurants.Yes, the measures put in place can be frustrating. But while we wait, even though dining in isn’t an option, we are far from powerless. It is more crucial than ever to keep our heads high and remain optimistic.

You’ve been enjoying the comfort of your home for months! You’re doing so well in your sweats, no makeup, and no shaving, without having to worry about what others think! It’s the perfect occasion to stay in your cocoon while also supporting your local restaurants! Use this opportunity to order meals from your favourite establishments, and even restaurants you’re less familiar with!

You can even do something nice for a friend or family member by having something delivered to their house! Every gesture matters, especially right now, when contact is limited.

And if you’re not sure where to begin, here are a few ideas to inspire you:
