The 2025 holiday season brought a pleasant surprise to a large portion of Quebec restaurateurs, according to a survey conducted by Association Restauration Québec. For 51 % of respondents, customer traffic was higher than usual, and 21.6 % of establishments were fully booked for several services, showing that diners were out in force across many restaurants. However, 12.7 % experienced traffic similar to a normal week, and 14.7 % reported a decrease in footfall compared to last year.

As the ARQ notes in its article,

“The holiday season remains a key moment for the restaurant industry,” and the numbers confirm it: this period continues to be essential for annual revenue and restaurant visibility.

A Real Economic Impact on Revenue

Restaurateurs surveyed confirmed that the holidays are still one of the most profitable times of the year: 13.7 % of establishments saw this period as the most profitable, and 37.3 % considered it among the most important. Despite the ongoing economic challenges, more than one-third of restaurateurs experienced increased traffic compared with the 2024 holidays, with 34.3 % reporting growth, 31.4 % stability, and another 34.3 % seeing a decline.

The average customer spend per person (excluding alcohol, taxes, and service) was estimated at $45.13, which remained stable or slightly increased for many restaurants. Dinner was the most popular service, chosen by 72.5 % of guests, far ahead of lunch (14.7 %).

Workforce at the Heart of the Holidays

While higher traffic boosted sales, staff availability remained a significant challenge. Restaurants had to manage increased needs for servers, cooks, and attendants to maintain smooth service during peak times. Having a well-prepared and flexible team proved crucial to maintaining quality and satisfying customers.

This is where RestoJobs played a strategic role, enabling restaurateurs to quickly find qualified and motivated candidates. During the holidays, the platform facilitated both temporary and permanent hiring, ensuring teams could meet demand and maximize revenues. For industry professionals, RestoJobs also provided direct access to the most relevant opportunities during this busy period.

Although January and February are traditionally quieter months, the trends observed over the holidays suggest opportunities for restaurateurs who adapt their marketing strategies, offerings, and teams. The sector still shows strong resilience despite economic challenges — a promising sign for hospitality and foodservice in Quebec.
